2020 Lunar New Year | Yang Metal White Rat

It’s my intention in this Lunar New Year post to give you an easy glimpse into this new year and also provide additional links to access experts in Chinese astrology.

I share several links (links located below this post) because I’m not an expert in Chinese astrology, but I know many people in my community look forward each year to learn more about the Lunar New Year and it’s my goal to provide an access point to begin a journey if you wish to learn more.

The richness of energetic connection with nature and the elements in Chinese astrology is something I feel important to connect with. As with the practice Qigong, the lunar new year connects with the energy of the elements in nature.

The year of the Yang Metal Rat begins on January 25, 2020 and ends on February 11, 2021.

2020 is the Chinese 4719th Year. 4,719 years are based upon the Hsia lunar farm calendar. Each new year begins on the second new moon after the winter solstice and is celebrated for two weeks.

The Rat is the first sign from the 12 animal cycle of the Chinese Astrology and for this reason, 2020 is considered a year of new beginnings and renewals.

The last “Metal Rat Year” was 60 years ago (1960). Chinese New Year is marked by the lunisolar Chinese calendar, and that means the exact date of Chinese New Year changes from year to year.  The lunar new year begins on the second new moon after the winter solstice and is celebrated for two weeks.  Traditionally celebrations begin the day before the New Year and continue until the 15th day of the new year (known as the Lantern Festival).

It’s a celebration of the start of spring, new birth and opportunities. With all “new years” the energy represents symbolically letting go of energy of the previous year and ushering in the happiness, abundance, growth and health in the new lunar year.

  • The lunisolar calendar is based on the sun’s longitude and Moons phases.
  • The Chinese Animal Signs Represent 12 Different Types Of Personalities.
  • The Chinese zodiac is divided into 12 houses and each house is a year in length.

Rat Personality Traits…

Characteristics of people born in the Rat year:  Independent, creative, strong attention to detail, alert, but said to lack courage. They are clever, quick thinkers and resourceful as well as optimistic and energetic.

The Year of the Metal Rat

“In the Hsia calendar, 2020 is symbolized by two Chinese characters: Yang Metal and Rat. Yang Metal is the Heavenly Stem (character on the top) and the Rat is the Earthly Branch (character on the bottom). The Rat is also a Water Element. In the Five Element cycle, Metal births Water. Because the Heavenly Stem (Metal) supports the Earthly Branch (Water), you can say that this combination represents a more harmonious relationship. Therefore, you might expect 2020 to be a more peaceful year. [Raymond Lo Grand Master | Feng Shui and Destiny consultant]

Qualities of metal

The positive qualities of metal are courage, speaking for what is right and determination. Metal qualities also include firmness, rigidity, persistence, and strength.

“In Chinese Taoist thought, Metal attributes are considered to be firmness, rigidity, persistence, strength, and determination. The metal person is controlling, ambitious, forceful, and set in their ways as metal is very strong. They are self-reliant and prefer to handle their problems alone. The metal person is also wise, business-oriented, and good at organization and stability. However, the metal person can also appreciate luxury and enjoy the good things in life. Just as metal can conduct electricity, the metal person has strong impulses and generative powers and can bring about changes and transformations for those who come into contact with them. The metal person is patient, as well as a good person with a strong will.”  (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Metal_(wuxing))

“Rat years are not a time for complacency, as Rats are constantly on the go. 2020 will be a time of regeneration and renewal, the perfect time to lay foundations, launch new projects, get married, start a family and/or buy a house.”  ~ Valerie Litchfield (https://catalystmagazine.net/the-year-of-the-yang-metal-rat/)
