Empathic grief and the energy in our lungs
by Maria Furlano, DMQ (China), MTOM, L.Ac.
Welcome to the art of tuning in podcast with Maria Furlano, sharing insights, tools and conversations to inspire your energetic well being. Hello, everyone, welcome. This is Maria Furlano.
Thank you for joining me today. Today I’m going to be talking about the energy of grief and how it resides in our body. And before you run off because I know that that does not sound like the most happy or positive topic. I’d love it if you could stick with me today because this is going to be applied to absolutely what we’ve been going through with the Coronavirus in the world. And also presently, right now, in June 2020 we’re at when I’m recording this with racism and the need to respect and speak up For what is true within your own energy, I would absolutely love for you to join me it’s not going to be political in any way. We’re going to talk about the energy in our bodies.
And before we jump in, as always, let’s take a few deep breaths. If you’re new to my podcast, thank you for joining me, we always take just a few deep breaths with an even longer exhale, to practice becoming present in the moment, no matter where we are, no matter what we’re doing, no matter what time it is, so we just take a nice deep breath in through our nose. And then when we’re ready, we make our exhale even longer than our inhale. And you can do that through your nose or you can just blow it out through your mouth. Whatever feels better to you. When you’re ready to do that, again, nice, long inhale through your nose and an even longer exhale through your mouth and just feel yourself present in this moment.
And thank you all for being here. We’ve been through quite a lot of energetic movement in the last three, four months. And we have been moving forward in ways where the energy has been healing, growing, expanding, culminating. And I’ve been having some conversations with people recently, and there’s still a great fear in many about getting sick. A couple of conversations that I’ve had and I’ve noticed this in myself as well, but people will say to me, you know, I woke up, and the first thing that popped in my head was, “Oh gosh, am I getting sick? I hope I’m not getting sick!”
And they said – “I hate that I’m doing that, because that’s not how I want to think. I’m not sick. But the fact that this pops into my head now, because it’s this paranoia is just not a happy feeling.”
And I’ve noticed this about myself too. Just recently, there was a great heaviness in my chest yesterday and today and I woke up thinking, oh, wow, I have this heaviness in my chest. Am I getting sick? And I immediately tuned into my body and did my normal thing and thought, No, this is grief. This is sadness. This is the heaviness that I’m picking up right now with everything that’s going on in the world, and also my own personal grief and sadness for how I feel about what’s happening in the world.
And then I spoke with somebody else right before I made this podcast. And they said something very similar. They were feeling very tired. It had crossed their mind too, “Am I getting sick?” None of us are getting sick. We’re all well, and it’s the perfect example that how we’re feeling in our bodies directly reflects what we can be picking up in the world.
We have our own emotions that are going on with our own thought patterns and our own lifestyle. And then right now for several months, we have been dealing with world events. Events that bring new ways of thinking and moving and acting through the world that we are now being forced to face, with how we take care of ourselves with how we connect and communicate with others and with the grave in justices that continue to happen in the world.
So, all of these things right now are being brought very strongly at once to the surface. And I think it’s wonderful that they are, but it can be overwhelming.
And what happens is, is that people can begin to shut down because they don’t feel well and they don’t understand what’s actually happening to them.
In medical Qigong. The lungs have an energetic emotional quality to them. And the lung energetic emotional quality is integrity and speaking up for what is true and right. Opposite to that, the lungs hold our grief, sorrow, sadness, shame and guilt.
Those emotions are what we learn and experience throughout our lives. So right now, with everything that’s happening in the world, those emotions are being triggered, including the emotion and the energy frequency of integrity and speaking up for what is true.
When we cry, or speak our truth, we move the energy in the lungs and we disperse that energy. We feel better. When we compress when we do not speak up for what is true. When we feel overwhelmed with grief, sadness, sorrow, shame, or guilt or a combination of those all different levels of frequency, the energy can get very heavy in our lungs.
You know this feeling if you’ve ever experienced a loss of any kind, whether you love someone and they transitioned from this lifetime, you feel that great grief and sadness and sorrow.
Or a relationship has ended that you care deeply about.
You may have done something in your life that you knew was wrong, you have the guilt and the shame.
So all of these qualities of energy frequency can become very stuck and stagnated in the lung and feel absolutely like you’re getting sick. And if you don’t attend to these emotions, if you don’t move the energy in the lungs, if you don’t allow your emotions to come to the surface and to release… And sometimes we need help with this. You know, we need a therapist to walk us through these things, we need to have support.
And sometimes, we just need to take time by ourself and allow these emotions to surface and actually recognize them and be honest with them. If you move these emotions through speaking for what’s true, through crying, through recognizing that they’re there and not ignoring them, then the energy releases itself and you will feel lighter and lighter.
And well, if you don’t, what happens is this energy becomes compressed, and you become very depressed. Depression is a huge part of not moving the energy in the body, and we get very tired so the lungs are vitality of the body, right? We bring in the air, we let go of the air, the lungs move. All of this moves blood in the body. The stronger your lungs are, the healthier your lungs are, the more vitality you’ll naturally feel in your body, the more energy the more energized you’ll naturally feel in your body, the clearer your head will be, your ideas will come. And of course, your heart energy will be freer because the heart holds the energy of joy. And the hearts energy can be very easily disruptive through anxiety. So these areas affect each other.
So if you’re feeling heavy in your body, if you’re feeling tired, if you’re feeling like you might be getting sick, and of course, as always, if you think you’re getting sick, please go to the doctor. You know, we’re in a time right now the Corona Virus. I understand that, but also look at your emotional state. See what you’re picking up.
A majority of people who listen to this podcast are highly sensitive, intuitive people, many of you are empaths, meaning that you easily pick up energy and emotions from others. And that also means from the world. It’s not just somebody standing across from you. But anyone who is energetically sensitive. Anyone who is emotionally intelligent is going to be feeling what’s going on in the world right now. Anyone who has any kind of compassion or who knows what is true and right and has any kind of feeling of how people should be treated and how we should be treating each other, will be picking up something that’s going on.
You all know if you’ve listened to my podcasts, that I really try so hard to stay away from the news. And I’m doing that now too. I’m watching very little news because I know that It affects my energy. But even when if you’re not watching the news or even if you’re watching very little news, just understand that the energy of the world, we all feel. And so if you’re feeling tired or overwhelmed or confused, or in a bad mood or feeling like you want to hide, this can be the energy that is compressing in your lungs and you want to grieve, you want to let it out. So I always recommend movement. You know, walking briskly, getting your breath going, stretching from side to side, getting your lungs nice and open. These are natural ways that will begin to lighten up and move the energy in these places.
But I think that it’s also really important to acknowledge for example, this morning when… I checked in with myself and I made sure I didn’t have a temperature and all that stuff and then I said, “Okay, yeah, this is emotion that’s happening right now.” And I sat with myself and I tuned in to my lungs. And I said, “Hello lungs,” I talked to myself all the time, I talk to my body all the time. I highly suggest it. When I work with clients, I talk to their bodies, we are all living moving energy, so it’s absolutely okay to talk to yourself!
I said, “Hello lungs, how are we doing?”
And I just felt this blahhhh feeling. What I realized when I was speaking to myself, is that it’s so overwhelming to feel the emotions that I’m feeling right now. That it’s very normal to want to ignore them.
And this is where we start to do things like drink more, eat more, procrastination instead of jumping into what we need to do, picking fights or arguments with people. And the reason why we do those things is we’re trying to avoid. We’re trying to make ourselves feel better… But we’re avoiding what really needs to come up to the surface. And so just by taking a moment and checking in with yourself and talking to yourself and saying, “Is this my energy that’s coming up?”
If you’re empathic, a lot of times what I teach is you say, Is this my energy? You’ll hear a yes or no? Or is this someone else’s energy? Am I picking this up from somewhere else? You’ll hear a yes or no. And then you can kind of boil it down to determine who you know, there are steps where you determine where it’s coming from, who it is, and that kind of thing. You can do that with yourself. I knew I knew exactly when I tuned in, exactly where I was feeling all the sadness. It’s not hard right now to understand where I might be feeling the sadness with everything that’s going on.
And then there’s that deeper level of real anger that’s in there. That’s what’s really making me tired, is there’s this very deep level of anger below the sadness. And that’s what I’m afraid of coming out and surfacing. And that’s what needs to come out. But it doesn’t need to come out in angry ways it needs to come out in speaking through the lung – in speaking for what is true, in holding my integrity and in speaking for what is right and true with what I believe.
So I can go and move that anger through punching my punching bag, or doing a more aggressive workout and using my voice through making sounds like “Ha,” or you whatever I want while I’m moving, that’s something we can all do. This is recommended all the time, to do things like that for ourselves. But also understanding that you will move your energy through speaking up for what is right and true in your own integrity, because that’s why the energy is compressing. It’s compressing, because something in your alignment, something in my alignment this morning, was not fully integrated in what I needed to do for myself.
So, I hope that brings some sort of insight and relief to anyone who is dealing with heavy energy right now. Specifically in their chest and their lung area, to maybe begin to practice tuning in. Checking in with yourself and seeing what’s going on emotionally with yourself. And once you realize what’s going on emotionally for yourself, the steps to open and heal that emotion begin to unfold.
When we hold things and compress them down, we can’t receive any guidance. We cannot receive any intuitive wisdom from ourselves for the universe, if we compress.
I wish all of you love, and I wish all of us tremendous health, healing, joy and integrity with our own energy. Much love to you.
